Chapter Eleven

Deuteronomy 28:8

The Lord will command the blessing on you in your barns and in all that you undertake. And he will bless you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

In the next few weeks before Christmas, Jewel worked hard to catch up on her studies. She and Emily began the search for a good university, a whole new world of options were now available for Jewel. Emily told Jewel her grades were good enough to get her into any college she wanted to go to. But with the pressure to leave Perry House gone, Jewel hoped to find a school closer to home. Oh, how she loved that word, Home. She could stay at Perry House forever and never regret it.

These days Jewel was spending most of her free time in the afternoons with Aunt Gemma. Gemma gave Jewel her very first bible and Jewel read it to Gemma using her quickly improving sign language skills. One afternoon Gemma told Jewel to read a specific passage regarding the armor of God.

Ephesians 6:10-18 The Armor of God

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Jewel finished reading the scriptures out loud and in sign language. Gemma asked her what the scriptures meant to her. Jewel didn’t hesitate. “This is the protective armor all Christians must have in order to escape the devil. The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Before we can fight such evil we must have the armor of God on at all times. This is how I can get past the pain and sickness so that I can help God’s children be healed. I must first learn to protect myself.”

Gemma nodded her head. Yes, this child was strong in the Lord. Her gift was going to be a powerful weapon against the dark ones. It was imperative for Jewel to learn to protect herself with the armor of God.
